“The man selling the newspaper is Joseph Dalton, my grandfather, who was from Ringsend and lived all his life there. He sold newspapers on Kildare Street until the age
of 81. This photo was taken the day the Second World War started (1 September 1939). The week after this photograph, my grandfather enlisted with the British Army and he was ultimately involved in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Eight people from the Ringsend area left to join the British Army, but only two returned. For the rest of his life, my grandfather didn’t know why he was chosen to live and others didn’t.”
