“My aunt, Gertie Lambert (the taller lady), with a friend (unknown). Gertie was from Whitworth Road in Drumcondra. When we were growing up we never heard much about Gertie or any of my father’s siblings so we don’t have much more information about her. It was only when my daughter was researching the family tree that we discovered that my father’s side of the family were Protestants. We grew up Catholic and I think that was one of the reasons for the lack of information – there was a stigma attached to being Protestant in Ireland at that time, unnecessarily so. In our family, it was the done thing to burn photographs when someone died, so we are lucky to have this one; or maybe it was fate.”
