“This photo has many cross-over stories: This is my maternal grandfather Patrick Whelan with cousins Dolores and Donal Whelan (left and right) children of John Whelan, with their maternal cousin __ McDarby, whose brother Gene would later become my best man, though we didn’t even know we were related! In the centre, my sisters, Sheila and Una Conneely (in grey with hats). This was taken during the week when my mother was in Holles St. Hospital having me (18th May 1939). A further link in the story is Findlaters Corner in the background. This building was originally owned by the grandparents of my future mother-in-law, Margaret O’Reilly, a claim we never believed until the 1901 census showed that they had stables and a thriving mail contract and hackney business. Amazing what one picture can reveal!”
