“This is a photo of me, my dad and two of my sisters.
Philomena, me (Colette), dad (now dead) and Margaret (Madge)
We are coming home from the cinema. Even though my mother
is not in the photo I think of her every time I look at it, as she made
all our clothes, smocked our dresses and knitted our cardigans.
I am from a family of nine children. My older siblings three sisters and
brother are not with us. My younger brother is not yet born but my
mother was expecting him at the time. My other brother Patrick
died young. It was a treat to go to the cinema. we usually went
locally but I think this was a special treat as Philomena had made her
confirmation, so we went into town to celebrate. I can clearly remember
‘the Man on Bridge’ taking the photograph and the excitement of telling
mum when we got home. This is a treasured photograph and my own
children readily recognise it as such.”
