“My Grandparents Billy and Annie Shannon are in this photograph, taken in Dublin on their honeymoon. I’m pretty sure the year is 1946 and the month is April. My grandfather had been an Irish Republican prisoner in Crumlin Road Prison in Belfast and they were married on his release from internment. In the picture they look very much in love. They raised a family of nine children in a small house in the St James’s area of Belfast. My grandfather died on December 6, 1993 and my nanny ten years later on July 27, 2003. They were wonderful people who added an enormous amount to all our lives – we miss them every day. They lie together at the gates of Milltown cemetery on Belfast’s Falls Road.”
