“My parents, John Joyce and Nora (née Murray). My father was born in Thurles in 1893 and served throughout the First World War as a telegraphist in the Royal Engineers. Nora was born in 1905 and raised in Galway, city and county. They both moved to Dublin in the 1930s and met while living in a boarding house in Middle Gardiner Street. Around that time, Nora opened a hairdresser’s in Parliament Street with a friend. My parents were married in September 1942, and lived in a top-floor flat in Mary Street.”
