“This photo was taken in the early summer of 1960. It shows my mam, Doris Curran, and her best friend, Mona Dunne, with me standing in the pram. Mona is holding my hand. The photo was taken on O’Connell Street Bridge. My mam and Mona used to go into town every week and Mona always carried that basket, which was the fashion then. In those days they always dressed up to go into town. Mammy had two other children, my brother Liam and sister Ann Marie. Mona was my sister’s godmother. We lived in Phibsboro and Mona in Cabra. This photo has pride of place in my living room. Both my mother and Mona are now dead and it is only as I get older that I realise what beautiful-looking women they both were.”
