“This is a photograph taken of my Aunt Maureen Hughes, in 1938, when she was just 11 years old. In the original photograph she appears with her older sister Nancy (Anna Patricia) Hughes. The reason that Nancy was cut out of this photo, is that this was the last photograph taken of Maureen, as she died of meningitis four months later, on December 13th 1938, and this image was the one used on her memoriam card. The family, Dad, Jeremiah Hughes (my grandfather), his sons, Denis, Jack, Thomas (my Dad), Gerry and daughter Nancy were devastated by the loss of their little sister, the youngest in the family, as she died just four months after their mother, who had died on the 6th August 1938, around the time the photo was taken. Many said that Maureen died of a broken heart following the death of her mother. This is the only picture we have of Maureen as she died so young, at just 11 years. ”
