“The great thing about this photo is the way my grandfather (gentleman in the hat on crutches) is looking straight at the camera. The lady on his right looks like my aunt I don’t know about the other lady on his left. He was born in Dublin in 1882 but lived in Liverpool from around 8 years of age. He joined the 11th Hussars Regiment in 1901 and fought in the first world war. He seems to have had an affinity with horses and this is noted on his army record and he received two medals – British war medal and Victory medal. He had various occupations after the war – there is a family connection to the Duke Pub in Duke street and he worked there as a barman at various times. By all accounts he worked on the Mersey Tunnel, and as a driver here in Ireland for the courts service. A very interesting man and I would have loved to have met him.”
