“On the left, Rose Cosgrove of Nash St Inchicore, Stannaway Rd Kimmage, and Lullymore Tce Sc Rd. As you can see from this photo, Rose,my second cousin and godmother, was a very stylish and beautiful young woman. This photo was taken in the early 1940s. Beside her is the love of her life Lt Claude Bishop a US soldier whom she met on a visit to our house in Newry.
The officers of the US army were billeted at 40 Canal St Newry, three doors from our home. My cousin in Canada tells me her mother often spoke of the great distress in our family circle when they learned of Claude’s death. My other grandparents lived in a large house in Barrack St., a short distance away, and as they were builders engaged in the building of the army camps it became a home from home for many of the soldiers. With a large family it was a great *’ceili house’, well it would give the wrong idea to call it a party house, so no doubt my lovely cousins would have been included in all the fun.
To the right of Lt Bishop is Rose’s sister Kathleen. He probably travelled up to Dublin on the train and spent the day being shown around the very relaxed Dublin, free from the cares of war.
Rose never married, perhaps the war ended her dreams, nor did Kathleen – she too young at heart!”
