“My grandparents John (Jack) and Rose Devlin (née Moran), around 1955. They had known each other since childhood, when they were both very active in Brookville Lawn Tennis and Hockey Club, near Artane. Jack worked with his father, John Devlin, who had been the official farrier to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and later went on to run his own garage – Annesley Garage in Annesley Place (previously Aberdeen Terrace), North Strand, Dublin 3. Jack later worked for the Irish Independent as a driver until his retirement in the early 1980s. Rose’s father, Charles Moran, had run his own shoe shop off O’Connell Street and Rose, along with some of her siblings, continued in the shoe business. She went on to work in Saxones shoe shop on O’Connell Street. Jack and Rose married in 1955 and lived in North Strand and, later, in Artane.”
