“My father, James Joseph Biggs (left), who was in the Irish Volunteer Force under Éamon de Valera, 1939–46. The Volunteer Force was set up during the Emergency as a national defence force. My father was a champion swimmer, boxer and gymnast and was used in advertising to encourage others to join.”
