“My parents, the writer Frank O’Connor (Michael O’Donovan) and his wife, Harriet. My mother wrote on the back of the photo that it was taken in 1955, and it was her first trip to Ireland. My father was from Cork, she was from Maryland, and they met when he taught at Harvard. They were married in 1953, lived in England for a few years and eventually settled in Ireland. Supportive of his work, she was a sounding board, his first reader. Sometimes he would use stories she told him of her life in Maryland, transposing them to Irish society.”
