“Carmel and me Noel Newbury on our honeymoon. Carmel was from Downpatrick and I was from England, and neither of us had been to the Republic before. We stayed in a hotel called the Ivanhoe somewhere around Harcourt Street. We loved our visit, and when the American company I was working for required a resident engineer in Dublin, I leapt at the chance to return to the city permanently. Amazing to reflect that in 1973 there were very few computer professionals in Dublin, which is why I transferred here. How things have changed! We stayed on in Cabinteely, which seemed a delightfully informal and friendly place. The tempo of life has accelerated in recent years, so I guess that makes me part of Dublin in the rare old times.”
