“The tall, dark handsome young man in the photo is our dad, Patrick (Paddy) Rogers and was taken by Arthur when he was just 18 years old. Paddy was from Drumlish in Longford and had only just moved to Dublin around that time where he worked as a barman initially. We only found the small, dog-eared photo in an old wallet after he died in September, 2017. None of us, including our mother Anna, had ever seen a photo of him so young. She didn’t meet Paddy until more than a decade later and they married in 1963. Our dad helpfully dated the back of the photo 11/7/49. He also wrote the name, address and telephone number of the man he’s posing with – Con McGovern of 22, Spencer Villas in Glenageary. We believe that he was a former neighbour in Drumlish or a cousin. With the help of Photoshop we managed to bring the photo back to it’s original glory and can see old landmarks like Nelson’s Pillar, Clery’s Clock and the Metropole Cinema.”
