“The dashing young couple in this photo are my parents, John Ryan, a farmer from Co. Wexford and Eilis McDonald from Crossabeg, Co. Wexford. They had recently met at her sister’s wedding to his brother and were possibly out on a first date! Da, as we called him in later years, had driven to Dublin to meet our mother and were caught on camera on O’Connell St.
They married in 1949 and had ten children, four girls and six boys and were the best parents ever! I always loved this photo as we thought Da looked like Cary Grant and Ma loved those fur gloves which survived for many years until little hands put an end to their respectability!!
Da had this photo by his bedside during his final days on this earth.”
