“James Fennelly, born in Kilkenny in 1898, was the youngest brother of Alice Hecker (nee Fennelly), Doreen Smyth’s (nee Hecker) grandmother. James spent his career as a policeman in Portlaoise, County Laois, Ireland. We suspect this may have been due to the maximum security prison built there in the 1830s which still operates as such today. He passed away in 1957.”
