“John O’Rourke (left) and Thomas Rooney, 5 May 1966. Thomas is my dad and John was his best friend. They were both from Cabra. Tom was eighteen at the time and John would have been nineteen. They regularly went into town to go to the pictures at the Adelphi cinema, more often than not followed by a dance at the CIÉ Club in Marlborough Street. They’d also have a nose at the remains of Nelson’s pillar as it had only recently been blown up. Back in the 1960s everyone dressed up to go out; they were freshly shaved, their shoes were shined and they always wore a shirt and tie!”
