“The man on the right is my uncle Paul McKnight, aged 20, with an unknown friend. He was the sixth child of ten, born to Joseph McKnight and Ann Redmond in Templeogue in 1927. In the late 1940s, he was a steward on the liners from Southampton to Australia and back. He often missed
the sailing and had to stay, illegally, in Australia until he could rejoin the liner when it next docked. He ultimately emigrated to Australia and I didn’t meet him until he returned to Ireland in 1979. Coincidentally, this photo shows a remarkable resemblance to a nephew of mine who has now emigrated to Australia!”
