“James (Jim) and Florence (Florrie) McLoughlin, taken, I believe, on their honeymoon in Dublin in October or November 1944. Florrie’s maiden name was Raymont. Jim, my dad, was born and raised in Dublin, where at one point he was a driver for the Theatre Royal. He joined the British army in the war and one of his postings was to North Devon, where he met my mother, Florrie. They married in north Devon and went to Dublin for their honeymoon. I was born the following year, but on my first birthday, in 1946, my mother was admitted to a TB sanatorium and died there in 1949. So you can see why this photo is very special to me. They were newly-weds who were happy and had no idea that their married life would be so short. Yes, there was happiness in my dad’s life after losing my mum to TB. In 1950 he remarried and he and Olive had another two children, my sister, Ann, and my brother, Mike. He died quite young though (by today’s standards) aged 60, while Olive died in 2011, aged 89.”
